Dangers of Not Investigating and Treating Your Leg Veins: Venous
Valvular Failure causes problems that are more than just uncomfortable or
unsightly. They can lead to problems that are dangerous, even life-threatening.
These can now be averted by modern vein treatment - a simple ultrasound
investigation and painless, yet very effective, office treatment! Delay will
only allow your legs to worsen. Once valves have failed the condition of the
legs progressively deteriorates.
Clots: Varicose veins are
prone to inflammation with clots, i.e. phlebitis. The risk of deep vein clots
is increased 400% with superficial phlebitis. These are the type of blood clots
that can kill you! Sometimes we will see, on ultrasound, a clot extending from
an area of superficial phlebitis down through a 'perforator' vein directly to
the deep veins and to a deep venous thrombus (DVT) just waving in the blood
stream, ready to break off and become a pulmonary embolus (Life Threatening!)
Clots in the deep system that do not go to the lungs can damage the valves in
the deep system.....then we can do very little except suggest stockings for
life. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent deep vein clots
and decrease the risk of pulmonary emboli and permanent damage to the valves of
the deep vein systems.
Deterioration: These
problems usually begin very gradually. Your mother or father's terrible legs
began with just a few thin spider veins perhaps and a little aching. Early
detection of failed valves by ultrasound is very simple and treatment is
painless. These are key to preventing escalating future problems. Act now.
This is a continually deteriorating condition until treated

Cellulitus: Stasis
Dermatitis is more than unsightly and uncomfortable. It is dangerous. The
sickened skin can become infected and lead to life threatening sepsis.
Ulceration: The
sickened skin of Stasis Dermatitis can ulcerate. Failed valves cause increased
venous pressure below causing fluid, protein and blood to leak out of distended
venous cappillaries into the tissues all day long. This causes edema, poor
oxygen and nutrient supply, thickened and discolored....sickened skin. This
skin can breakdown and ulcerate.
Bleeding
Reticular Veins: Those purple and sometimes nodular veins about the
ankle can break causing frightening hemorrhage. Usually these are easily
stopped with pressure but they are frightening and have caused many 911 visits
to emergency rooms.
Medication
Side Effects: Swollen Ankles, Nocturnal Cramps, "Secondary"
Restless Legs, Venous Stasis Eczema, Venous Ulcers are all often treated with
temporizing, palliative medications. These patients need definitive treatment
of the vein problem causing these conditions and they can stop these unnecessary
medications. A lady with swollen ankles from failed vein valves (and not
congestive failure or renal failure), does not have to increase her risk of
stroke and problems of potassium and other electrolyte loss by taking diuretics
(Lasix, furosemide, hydrochlorthiazide, etc.) She simply needs to have a simple
treatment to fix her veins. Similarly, risking, cramp meds, quinine, Requip,
sleep medications, prolonged topical steroids, and prolonged wound care
medications and others for the conditions above is, with modern vein treatments,
unnecessary and foolish.
The
Domino Effect: This 'Domino Effect' works both ways. People whose legs
hurt or feel extraordinarily 'tired' are not as active. This inactivity leads
to increased weight and decreased cardiovascular health. People with nocturnal
cramping (night cramps, 'Charley horses' and varieties of 'secondary' restless
symptoms are often sleep deprived. People with unsightly legs often have a
diminished quality of life
.they no longer go the beach and they stay
inside more because walking about all covered up in the Florida heat is
difficult. The ladies often will not wear shorts or dresses and alter their
lives accordingly. One patient said we had 'fixed her complexion'
.we said
we could not take credit for that
.she said it was a 'positive' domino
effect: she said she used to lay on the couch for weeks thinking about raking
her yard but delaying it, knowing that an hour on her feet would lead to many
hours of leg pain and laying on the couch with her feet up. She said that now,
after treatment, she just pops up and does it. Beyond that, she bought shorts
and walked more and she bought nice dresses and joined a belly-dancing class (at
74!)
.she enjoys going out, the camaraderie of the other ladies her age,
the music and the exercise. This patient looks ten years younger
.she has
color in her checks (she is no longer grey faced), she has a sparkle in her eye
(no longer does she appear kind of sad), and she has a confident walk (she is no
longer painfully shuffling). She says that her legs are Younger!!! ....her legs
feel and look 'younger'. She says our treatment of her legs pushed over the
first domino and helped her change her life.
