Restless Legs Are Often Caused By Vein Problems

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a common issue, and it can often be caused by vein problems. Family doctors often do not properly treat RLS, and patients continue to have restless legs despite following prescribed drugs and exercise regimens that were prescribed by their family doctor. To determine if your restless legs are caused by common vein problems, the first step is to schedule a consultation with the vein specialists at Mountcastle Vein Centers. Please read the following information below to learn more about RLS and how it is caused by vein problems.

Individuals suffering from restless legs have a constant need to move their legs. Patients with RLS complain of an “aching”, “itchy”, “throbbing”, or “pins and needles” type-feeling in their legs. This feeling causes the patient to want to constantly move their legs during waking hours, resting hours, or both. Approximately 1 in every 10 people in the United States suffers from restless legs, and restless legs can occur with both male and female patients of all ages.

For restless legs, typically prescribed “treatment” by family doctors is a combination of dopaminergic drugs, pain relievers, an exercise program, more regular sleeping patterns, and/or a decrease in caffeine or alcohol. However, many times these typical treatments for Restless Legs Syndrome only temporarily relieve symptoms and do not treat the cause of the problem. Despite following these typical treatments, patients still have the pain, discomfort, and interference with daily living that comes with Restless Leg Syndrome.

Vein problems are often the root cause of restless legs. Approximately 40% of the United States population is affected by vein problems. The vein problem specifically associated with Restless Leg Syndrome is that the veins do not properly pump blood back up to the individual’s heart. The legs then ache, itch, throb, or feel like “pins and needles,” and this is the body’s way of trying to get the individual to move his or her leg muscles. When the leg muscles move, they “squeeze” the blood in the veins back up towards the heart and temporarily relieve the patient’s need to constantly move their legs.

Although the patient can temporarily relieve the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome by moving their leg muscles, the patient will continue to suffer from restless legs later that day if the root of the problem – veins that do not properly circulate the blood – is not properly treated. Mountcastle Vein Centers uses Diagnostic Duplex Ultrasound to test whether your restless legs may be caused from common vein problems. After this diagnostic test and if vein problems are found, Mountcastle Vein Centers treats these failing veins that can be causeing restless legs through state of the art procedures such as EVLT Laser Procedure, Sclerotherapy, Ambulatory Phlebectomy.
