Varicose
Veins:
The vein systems are like upside-down trees......when the
valves fail in the trunk, the vessels below hold up the weight of a column of
blood up to your heart. The branches of this tree distend. These dilated
veins on the surface of your leg are commonly called varicose veins. (90%,
however, of the dilated veins are inside the leg). They swell when you are
standing or sitting for prolonged periods. This causes pain.
If a
vein trunk above your varicose veins has defective valves, we close it with
laser or radiofrequency. The blood then goes through normal pathways to the
deep circulation and the pressure is taken off these varicose veins below.
The
veins can then return to their normal size and the pain, aching and tiredness
are relieved.
People under 40 years old often have enough fibrous
resilence for their varicosities to shrink to normal size and completely
disappear. Much like a balloon that is blown up the first time will return to
normal. After 40, the varicosities will shrink but sometimes not completely go
away, they are, in a sense, stretched and may need a micro-phlebectomy
procedure.
