Skin Changes of Venous Disease

Varicose veins are just the 'tip of the iceburg'. Skin changes are a result of the same failue of vein valves. Everyone knows that patients with varicose veins go to vein doctors. Many people do not know that the patients pictured here have the same problem as patients with varicose veins: failed vein valves. These patients below with 'stasis dermatitis', itching, eczema, burning, skin discoloration and ulceration have the same vein valve problem as the patients with simple varicose veins. They have the same disease (venous insufficiency - failure of vein valves), need the same workup (duplex doppler ultrasound) and will respond dramatically to the same treatment (laser or radio endovenous closure of vessels with damaged valves).
